Pterodactyl Installation Guide: Panel + Wings on a Linux VPS
Pterodactyl gives you a pro game panel on your own VPS. This guide outlines architecture, install phases, SSL, and the ops burden compared with managed Vision Host plans.

What you are installing
Pterodactyl has two major pieces: the Panel (PHP web UI and API) and Wings (the daemon that runs Dockerized game servers on a node). You can run both on one VPS for small setups or split them later.
You will also need a database (MySQL/MariaDB), Redis, a web server (nginx), PHP extensions, Composer dependencies, and valid SSL certificates. This is real sysadmin work - not a one-click myth.
If you only need one Minecraft server, managed /minecraft-hosting from ₹119/mo is usually wiser. Self-hosted Pterodactyl shines when you want multi-tenant game hosting on your own /vps-hosting instance from ₹879/mo.
Prerequisites and sizing
Use a fresh Ubuntu LTS or Debian release with root/SSH access, a public IPv4, and a domain pointing to the VPS for the panel URL. SSL via Let’s Encrypt expects working DNS.
Size the VPS for both the panel services and the game containers you will place on Wings. A panel-only node can be modest; a node running Minecraft needs RAM according to your servers.
Vision Host VPS plans provide the KVM/NVMe substrate. We do not ship a free VPS for Pterodactyl labs - use paid capacity so Docker workloads remain stable.
- Fresh Linux VPS with nested virtualization/Docker support
- Domain DNS A record for the panel
- Email for Let’s Encrypt notices
- SSH key auth enabled
- Firewall plan (80/443/SSH + game ports)
High-level install phases
Phase 1: prepare OS packages, create swap if needed, harden SSH, and set timezone to Asia/Kolkata if that matches your ops. Phase 2: install Docker for Wings workloads. Phase 3: install Panel dependencies (PHP, nginx, MariaDB, Redis).
Phase 4: create the panel database user, download Panel release files, run composer install, configure .env, generate keys, and run migrations. Phase 5: configure nginx + SSL and create the first admin user.
Phase 6: install Wings, create a node in the panel, place the auto-generated config on the daemon host, start Wings, and allocate game ports. Exact commands change - always follow the official Pterodactyl docs for your version.
| Component | Role | Failure symptom |
|---|---|---|
| Panel | UI + API | Cannot login / 502 |
| Wings | Runs servers | Servers stuck installing |
| MariaDB | Panel data | Migrations fail |
| Redis | Queues/cache | Jobs stall |
| Docker | Server isolation | Eggs will not boot |
SSL, security, and firewalls
Never run a public panel on plain HTTP with default passwords. Issue certificates, force HTTPS, and use strong admin credentials with 2FA if available in your stack.
Open only required ports. Game allocations should be intentional ranges, not 1–65535 exposed. Separate SSH to key-only access.
Keep the panel patched. Game hosting panels are attractive targets because they sit next to valuable world data.
Eggs, allocations, and first Minecraft server
Import or use official eggs for Paper/Purpur. Create an allocation with your public IP and port 25565 (or a chosen port). Deploy a server, accept EULA via the UI workflow, and verify console output.
Mount sufficient disk; Docker volumes fill quickly with backups and dumps. Monitor node disk from day one.
Take panel-level backups of server directories before upgrades. Your Pterodactyl install is now infrastructure - treat it like production.
Common install pitfalls
DNS not propagated before certbot, Wings config UUID mismatches, Docker permission issues, and under-provisioned RAM when multiple servers autostart are the usual suspects.
Another pitfall: installing on a free trial VPS that dies mid-month. Export early or - better - build on paid Vision Host VPS from the start.
If Wings cannot reach the panel API, check firewalls, SSL validity, and that the panel URL in Wings config matches exactly.
Managed alternative
Self-hosting Pterodactyl is educational and powerful. It is also ongoing maintenance: updates, DB backups, SSL renewals, and Docker housekeeping.
Vision Host already operates panel-based Minecraft and Discord products so you can skip reinventing the panel. Use /minecraft-hosting or /discord-bot-hosting when you want results without sysadmin nights.
Choose self-hosted Pterodactyl when multi-server control on your own hardware allocation is the goal - and budget paid VPS accordingly.
Operations after install
Document node IDs, allocation ranges, and backup scripts. Schedule MariaDB dumps. Monitor disk inodes as well as bytes.
Create separate user accounts for staff with limited panel permissions. Not everyone needs root-equivalent server wipe rights.
Revisit performance quarterly. As you add servers, you may split Wings to a second Vision Host VPS while keeping the panel centralized.
